Art Deco Black & White Painted Porcelain Flapper Silhouette According to PAINTED PORCELAIN JEWELRY & BUTTONS by Dorothy Kamm, flapper portraits were done in a narrow window of time, between 1922 and 1930. During this time period black and white was also stylish, like it is now. Wouldn't it surprise everyone wearing this antique brooch with your black & white accessories, perhaps as a scarf pin or on your shirt? Or with a dark red dress! While many portraits were made with the use of transfers, this one is entirely hand painted, first with a layer of an opalescent luster glaze, which lends a subtle dance of colors to the background. Then the portrait was added in thick layers of black. I love the detailed silhouette portrait--look at the jewels in her hair--and finished with a black band around the edge. There are no chips in the porcelain, the paint is nearly immaculate; any fading or wear can be seen only under magnification. The brass setting is sound; the open C-hook holds well. Size is 1 7/8" tall x 1 1/2" wide. Enjoy this rare beauty in very good + condition.
