On this page we've gathered most of our jewels that represent the 60's, an era of hip, mod, and ethnic jewelry. Hippie jewelry included
love beads and boho ethnic looks, especially hemp and hand-made looks.
Mod jewelry included flower power, black & white "op art," flapper-length bead necklaces, and multi strand necklaces in
day-glo colors--orange, brilliant pink, extreme yellow, and lime were popular. This was the era of giant pendants, including articulated animals,
especially owls. Also, colored faceted balls of Lucite jewelry, big hoop earrings,
ball drop earrings, and bright plastic bangles were prevalent. Ethnic
jewelry included interpretations of East Indian, Egyptian, and Asian looks,
often with combinations of one or more ethnic design elements. These ethnic
styles went on into the 1970's, very often big,
bold
colorful jewels such as the creations of Kenneth Lane, Accessocraft, Art,
Castlecliff and many other signatures. Even the conservative designers at
Monet got into the action!
Designer jewels that sold with only paper hangtags for identification are widespread on the market, often featured in books as unsigned beauties. An adaptation of Medieval motifs in jewelry can be seen in the ubiquitous Maltese crosses the 1960's. Also, another Victorian Revival became popular and pieces are fairly easy to tell from the real thing. The 60's revival jewelry is smaller and can otherwise be identified by textured backs, V-clasp construction and safety clasps. Plastic and resin cameos were a favorite, especially the pony-tail girl and the German head-band girl. The beloved Gerry's cameos of this era are highly collectible, and those who collect DeLizza and Elster (Juliana) should have at least one of their decadent cameos. Another look was an Art Nouveau revival in the late 1960s and into the 1970s. Pieces were very colorful, some almost psychedelic, including loads of cloisonné butterflies, dragonflies and lady motifs. The Art Nouveau revival of this era was also widespread in the print and home design industries.
Other popular carryovers from the 1950 were the "gold & diamond" look, gold tone jewelry without stones, big colored rhinestone necklaces, diamante necklaces & brooches, 50's style multistrand beaded necklaces with matching earrings. Although these types of jewels are beautiful and were made into the 1960's they are more associated with the 1950's.
