H. Pomerantz We
have new info about jewelry designer Herman Pomerantz.. Thanks to email
exchanges between myself & Mr. Pomerantz's grandson, who has consulted his
father as well. Herman Pomerantz was born in 1901, so probably did not go
into business until at least the 1920s. Mr. Pomerantz worked for a short while
with a partner named Max Silverman. The earliest pieces are probably the open
C-clasp pieces. Pomerantz designed jewelry until the mid 1950s, though the
company continued making jewelry into the 1960s. Mr. Pomerantz died in
1967.
He patented several designs during the 1930s and early 1940s, and the patent drawings will soon eventually be posted on this site along with a special H. Pomerantz show gallery of jewels we've collected and sole throughout the years. In addition to costume jewelry, Pomerantz also produced unusual metal belts, large, showy buckles made from a variety of materials, including bakelite! Pomerantz is also well known for making buttons, including women's cuff buttons. Much confusion has risen from the fact that Herman Pomerantz made a great deal of very large Victorian Revival jewelry circa 1930-40, heavy jewelry with open backed unusual stones and fancy metal textures that do look much like 19th century jewelry, even to experts. H. Pomerantz jewelry with textured backs and AB rhinestones were made circa 1960. There are at least 4 signatures: "H. Pomerantz & Co. N.Y.," "H. Pomerantz Inc. N.Y.," "H. Pomerantz Co." and just "H. Pomerantz." Some try to date the jewelry by the signatures, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to them. I would like to thank Mr. Rich Pomerantz, Herman Pomerantz's grandson, who volunteered as much information as he and his father can recall. Rich Pomerantz is a very talented photographer. What a family of artists! I am still gathering information on H. Pomerantz.

Unique
Swing Time H. Pomerantz Dangling Brooch
RARE. Oh, the drama! Because of the wooden beads I thought this brooch might date back to the 1930s, but combining of gilded and silvertone metals, as this brooch offers, is a style popular in the 1940s. The wooden beads are painted vibrant colors; blue, brown and green with golden, blue, orange, red & yellow swirls, flowers and other decorations. Two of the beads have additional painted decorations applied to resemble trail lampwork. The central beads are caged, one in a silvertone nouveau-esque design, the lower beads in a gilded modernist style cage. aging the beads. Dangling below are goldtone tassels. I found no damage of any kind on this 5 5/8" tall x 2 3/4" wide beauty. Excellent condition. $125 | ||

Truly
Regal Victorian Revival Girandole Brooch by H. Pomerantz
This incredible 3 1/3" x 4 1/8" brooch offers a giant--1 1/2"--amber glass prong set stone The The golden scrolling framework is gold-tone is decorated with five busy rhinestone dangles, with bezel set navettes and small gold balls. It is very likely this piece was hand made and the stones hand set; you can see evidence in the frame for the giant amber stone and also in the bezels of the dangling navettes. The front of the brooch retains the original gilt finish, while the back of the piece shows minor finish wear. Signed POMERANTZ INC. N.Y. Very Good +++. $150 |

Pomerantz Aurora Borealis AB Pave Leaf Brooch. Circa 1955. For sheer vintage sparkle plus collectibility, we offer this fairly well- known H. Pomerantz leaf brooch. The pale goldstone base of the leaf is quite convex, dipping sensuously inward so that the glinting pave AB crystal rhinestones can play off one another's light, glinting mainly a pink and gold blush, but also a rainbow of colors depending on the environment and your movement. The pave chatons are set open back, and you can see that their silver foil is entirely intact; someone took good care of this brooch. AB baguettes line the stem and surround the leaf body. At 2 7/8" long this simple jewel will add a large splash of elegance for evening. Signed H. Pomerantz & Co. N.Y. on a rectangle plate in back. Excellent condition. $58 |

Pomerantz Plump Angelfish with Turquoise Beads
1950's. Here's a rare and very plump little angelfish by H. Pomerantz. The gold tone metalwork is full of detail, with scaled, brushed fins, polished stripes, and a poufy-cute mouth. He has peacock rhinestone eyes and turquoise bead accents. He measures only 1 3/4" wide x 1 /34" tall, but he's plump enough to make and extra half a pin, standing 1/2" from the pin stem. This is the first time I've ever seen this fish, so if you want him better buy now; you may not see another. Very Good + condition. Enjoy. $75

Pomerantz jewelry, and this large brooch is no exception; the high quality sapphire blue pastes seem to have the secret of eternal youth-- as dazzling as if they weren't 70 years old. H. Pomerantz Antique Celtic Knight Belt & Buckle Circa 1890. A very unusual find intact. I have seen a photo of another H. Pomerantz warrior buckle--a Samurai. Perhaps H. Pomerantz made an entire line of warrior belts. If so, it would be quite a challenge to collect them all. The 3" x 2" buckle is of shining silvertone and gilded openwork stamped with clovers, vines, & various textures. There are also applied metal embellishments, including the centerpiece bearded Celtic knight, his armor designed in a convex cross shape. He rises about 1/2" high; at first I thought it might open, locket style, but there are no hinges. The belt itself is made of a remarkable gold tone flexible tank-track style engraved linkage, about 1 inch wide. The belt clasps at 28-30." The buckle can be removed of course, to add to another belt if desired. Belt and buckle are both in Very Good condition; there's a bit minor wear on the gilding showing through silvertone. The blackish color is tarnish on the back of the buckle and in depressions. Marked H.POMERANTZ & CO. N.Y. $95 |
