Vintage Costume Jewelry
Whiting & Davis
Whiting & Davis is one of
the oldest costume jewelers in the U.S. According to Fred Rezazadeh, author of
COSTUME JEWELRY A Practical Handbook & Value Guide, the firm started
as a chain company owned in by William Wade and Edward P. Davis. In 1907 C.W.
Whiting became a partner, then full owner. They are known as silversmiths and also for their invention of a machine that could produce the fabulous
mesh bags. Throughout the 20th century they produced costume jewelry, the most
popular, besides the mesh necklaces, being their huge bangles and fabulous
cameos, reproduced from antique styles. Early marks for chains include W.C. Co,
for Whiting chain company; also W. & D. On most of their costume jewelry you
will find Whiting & Davis Mesh Bags or Whiting & Davis in a
cartouche.

Whiting
& Davis Victorian Revival Rose Painted Porcelain Set
One of my favorite sets by Whiting and Davis is this rose painted porcelain necklace, hinged bangle bracelet and clip on earrings. The lovely dark pink roses and surrounding green foliage is a transfer, but dabs of gold paint has been added by hand. In some of the pictures t this paint will appear as dark smudges. But the set is clean and ready to wear. The hanged bangle bracelet offers ornate design of leaves on both sides of the oval 3/4" x 5/8" porcelain. This bangle, complete with safety chain, measures 5/8" at the widest part; the inner diameter is 2 1/8" x 2 1/4". It is not signed, but obviously part of the set. The clip earrings are 1" and signed "Whiting & Davis Co" on clip. The rose pendant is gorgeous in it's ornate openwork frame, measures 1 1/2" (not counting bail.) It dangles from 22" chain with the Whiting and Davis hang tag. Bracelet and necklace are in Excellent condition, earring Very Good with minor wear on back. Enjoy for $88 |

Whiting & Davis
Hand Painted Porcelain Portrait Bangle Bracelet
Circa 1960. No costume luxury was spared when Whiting and Davis made their famous hinged bangles. Here's a fantastic Victorian Revival piece, a porcelain painting imported from Limoges France, the famous Lady in Blue. The lady is hand painted over a transfer, giving an essential pearled look to her hair decoration and collar. How beautiful. The oval porcelain is encased in a silvertone bezel among intricate silvertone leaves, bows, and other openwork folderol which extends to the side of the bangle. This bracelet is signed Whiting & Davis Mesh Bags over the inside hinge, and you also get the Limoges signature in gold on the back of the porcelain. The bracelet measures 1 1/2" wide at the portrait and
1/2" in back. The jewel fits a small to small-medium wrist without
pinching; it's just a bit too tight on my regular medium wrist. Inner diameter
is 2" x 2 1/4". Comes complete with safety chain. Excellent condition.
Such a Highly collectible can become an heirloom in your family. $145 |

Whiting
& Davis Amethyst Glass Cameo Brooch & Earrings Set
Not often seen, this great set of cameos are fashioned in high relief from frosted molded glass against a black surface. The Bacchanalian maidens, with grape leaves in their hair, are absolutely luxurious. Cameos may at times appear prim & proper, but these ladies have a special message. The cameos are set in silvertone and have mirrored backs. The brooch is 2" x 2" and rises over an inch from the pin stem; in fact, there's enough room to gather an extra thick scarf for pinning, or thicker jacket fabric. The matching clip-on earrings are 7/8". All pieces are in Excellent condition. $75 |

Whiting
& Davis Black Lily Intaglio Pendant
Beautiful, graceful lilies, perhaps Lilies of the Valley, are carved into the mirrored surface of this thick jet black hematite-like pendant, which has beveled edges and is coronet set into the raised shining silvertone openwork setting. Hanging from a thick, fancy 24" silvertone chain. The back of the pendant is silver mirror; you can check how pretty you are while wearing it! The pendant is 2 1/2" x 2" and rises about 2/3" from the surface; this is a heavy, quality piece. The ornate openwork bale adds an extra inch to the drop. Excellent condition. $48 |
